Art and Music
At Prince of Peace Catholic School, students exercise their creativity on various enjoyable projects following our curriculum under the direction of our art faculty. The curriculum offers a sequential art training program that builds on what students have learned in previous grades and prepares them for the next grade.
The curriculum has two fundamental goals.
First, over 9 years from K5 to 8th grade, students receive a complete coverage of all essential elements and principles of art including color, line, shape, form, texture, pattern, balance and emphasis.
Second, students learn about and imitate in their own ways the masters of the western art world (like Monet, Michelangelo, Van Gogh, Matisse, and more). They receive a thorough introduction to art history, media exploration, creative self-expression, and drawing techniques as seen in the work of the masters.
Music | Chorus | Musical Theater | Band
Prince of Peace Catholic School provides a comprehensive music education program with opportunities for leadership in the Sacred Music and Liturgy of the school and parish. Through cumulative curricular objectives we develop singing skills, experience ensemble participation and performance, achieve music literacy, and cultivate an appreciation of the full spectrum of musical styles and genres.
Our early childhood students (K4-2) learn standard five line notation in both treble and bass clefs, learn rhythm patterns and values of notes, learn to match pitch and sing age appropriate songs for school and church events, learn instrument family groups, and learn sacred singing including the Kyrie and Regina Caeli. Through projects, the students also learn about Beethoven and Bach.
Our elementary students (3-5) achieve proficiency in basic rhythmic and staff notation, learn Sanctus, Agnus Dei, Tantum Ergo, and O Salutaris among other sacred liturgical settings, learn to sing rounds and harmonies, implement rhythm skills with Boomwhackers and learn more about composers: Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Vivaldi, and Gershwin.
Our middle school students (6-8) review all basic rhythmic notation for standard time signatures and staff notes, learn triple meter and implement into musical performance, review all chants and other Mass responses for active conscience participation in the Sacred Liturgy and learn to read and sing using basic Gregorian notation. Students also study composers and their works; composers include Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Bach, Beethoven, Gershwin, Handel, Haydn, Brahms, and Rossini. Students perfect singing in two and three part harmonies from a musical score.
Parish Children’s Choirs
Primary Choir. K5 and 1st grade students learn choral singing in weekly rehearsals. Songs and games build skills for singing and assist in faith formation. Students will sing once a month from October through Eastertide at the 10:00 am Mass. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays 3:30 to 4:30pm in Croghan Hall.
Junior Choir. Boys and girls in 2nd-5th grade learn choral singing and grow in their faith. Singing skills and musicianship progress along with knowledge of the liturgy. Students will sing once a month from October through Eastertide at the 10:00 am Mass. Rehearsals are on Wednesdays 3:30 to 4:30 pm in the choir loft of Prince of Peace Catholic Church.
The St. Catherine Choir
This student choir is open to all 4 to 8 grade students with interest in singing weekly at our school liturgy every Wednesday morning. The choir also sings at school, church, music festivals, competitions, and community events throughout the school year. Rehearsals are after school on Thursday and on Wednesday morning before school mass. Students sing pieces composed for singing in unison, two parts, and three parts. The choir also sings a choral Mass for special occasions throughout the year.
Musical Theater Productions
Each spring, Prince of Peace Catholic School students in grades 4 to 8 are invited to try out for the Fall Musical. Three performances are held in mid-September annually, and rehearsals are daily after school from the beginning of August (before school year starts) through mid-September. Students learn to perform a standard or abridged standard musical by working together as a team to perform the best possible show of which they are capable. For those students who haven’t experienced a team work dynamic in other settings, musical theater can serve as a creative avenue for this type of interpersonal collaboration. Past student performances include: Disney’s Jungle Book, The Wonderful Land of Oz, Once Upon a Mattress, and Disney’s Alice in Wonderland.
