At Prince of Peace Catholic School, we have the opportunity to provide assistance to students with diagnosed and professionally documented learning differences or disabilities.
Such services are provided in-house by our Prince of Peace Catholic School Learning Specialist and include:
- progress monitoring throughout the school year,
- appropriate classroom accommodations, and
- constant communication between the Learning Specialist, teachers, and the parents of the child monitored.
The Learning Specialist’s role at our school is centered on the individual needs of children with learning differences. Part of this role is to oversee student assessments (DIBELS, Children’s Progress, STAR) which help us uncover the symptoms of learning differences early, to organize and review the data for parents and teachers, and then to monitor student progress as needed throughout the school year. The Learning Specialist will keep an ongoing screening process of students, and then initiate communication with the teachers regarding the data.
Another facet in the role of the Learning Specialist is to communicate and work constantly with the teachers at Prince of Peace Catholic School. This includes reviewing how assessment results may impact the learning environment of the students in the classroom, facilitating meetings with teachers to analyze student progress, and identifying priority learning needs for individual students. Should teachers need assistance or direction in how to effectively maximize student learning in the classroom, the Learning Specialist must provide appropriate guidance on such matters.
The Learning Specialist is to take initiative in appropriate interventions on behalf of individual students with special needs. In order to take these initiatives, the specialist must provide support for the faculty of the school, while also interacting and communicating with the families and students. The Learning Specialist is to take the lead in discussing assessment data, classroom data, and observations with parents, as well as providing recommendations for appropriate and feasible actions based on this data. He/she will also provide referrals for diagnostic evaluations, specialized services, and specialized instructors, should the need arise.
As part of the support for students, teachers, and parents, the Learning Specialist will meet with the parents and teachers to review current evaluation paperwork. After this review, the group will determine an educational plan for the student (Student Academic Plan or SAP), which includes proper accommodations to be provided in the classroom.
The role of the Learning Specialist is to make sure the needs of your child are being met in the classroom, and to advocate for your child so as to ensure they are receiving the best education at Prince of Peace Catholic School.
